In the eyes of Fatou Ka the most important things in life are honesty, knowing your word, keeping your pride, knowing yourself worth, understanding where you come from, and honesty. These were all thing that her parents taught her in her household. Fatou has been bestowed with very strict parents and this is a blessing and a curse. Although she couldn't see it as a child, her parents taught her the value of money, pride, and life. Fatou's parents wanted her to be a successful woman in life, nothing more, nothing less. All the things her parents taught her were utilized throughout her life.
Fatou has faced many obstacles in her life. First there was the mishaps with her husband, then the other man, then the birth of twins, then the struggle of raising them by herself, then the fact that the men in her life were only trying to make sure she didn't succeed, the opinion that she wasn't suppose to succeed in America, On top of all that everyone doubting her, For Fatou it was a difficult transition from Africa to America, due to the custom difference. In Africa, people helped each other climb the ladder, but in America people used each other as stepping stones. Fatou's first struggle was her marriage. Fatou met her husband at seventeen, and got married at twenty two. In the beginning she was blinded by his “Love” for her, but after a while he wanted something new and Miss Fatou thought to herself “Where Is the Love Now?” Miss Fatou's second relationship ended with death, but not after he gave her twins. These unfortunate events ended her up with three children to support by herself, but she gave her faith to God and looked upon the situation with a smile and said “I like a challenge and anything you think I can't do I'll prove you wrong”. It would be a lie to say that it was all easy but Miss Fatou raised three children, paid her bills, went to school, and loved her children regardless of the circumstances. Miss Fatou wants her family strong perseverance to continue throughout her children.
One very important thing that is dear to a woman is her children. Miss Fatou's children are her dream. Miss Fatou wants to teach her children her experiences so that they won't make the same mistakes. Main thing she wants them to learn are, dignity, self-respect, and respect for others, and wants them to know that impossible isn't shouldn't be a part of their vocabulary so they can strive to be the best they can be. Miss Fatou knows that kids are influenced by their parent’s decisions. The reason why she believes this is because she was greatly influenced by her mother. Miss Fatou's mother was a hard worker, she's a hard worker, her mother raised four kids on her own, she raised three kids on her own, her mother was strict, she is very strict, and this continues on with a lot of qualities. Miss Fatou is a reflection of her mother.
If Miss Fatou were to describe her life in one word it would be “Awesome”. As of now her dreams are pretty much accomplished, she is where her and God want her to be and all that's left is for her kids to succeed. Miss Fatou's children are greatly influenced in the African culture but not as great as her own, and the chain is slowly being taken over by America. Fatou's culture didn't have a significant impact on her life but her culture showed the foundations of true value to everything she did. She didn't let anyone stop her from accomplishing her dreams or let anyone stop to pull her down with them. If things didn't work out she took note of what went wrong and continued to pursue her dreams. In a world where no-one cares for your success but you, it is harder for one to accomplish their goals. That world is America and life isn't free or easy so you have to know yourself and continue to be yourself. In the face of uncertainty, when everyone doubted her and while the odds were stacked against her. Fatou Ka accomplished her American Dream.
